FASHION ASIA names “10 Asian designers to watch”

Selected by a panel of renowned industry leaders, works of the region’s  ten most outstanding design designers/brands would be featured in a curated exhibition coinciding Fashion Asia 2017 Hong Kong fashion conference.

Let’s get to know three of them before “watching” them at Fashion Asia 2017 Hong Kong!

Yat Pit (Hong Kong)
1)      Which city do you currently live/work?
We both live in and work in Hong Kong.

2)      How long have you been in fashion as a career?
On Ying - 6 years / Jason - 7 years

3)      What is your design DNA? What does your fashion represent?
Yat Pit's DNA is built on our love for culture and real living situations we see around us on a daily basis. There’s a depth to the way we appreciate something and develop into an idea. You only see what your eyes want to see; our work represents a different mind-set / different view to look at a particular thing or situation. We are always drawn to the things that are discarded or neglected, those are the things that can be rebuilt or brought back to life. It’s a little bit like turning stone into jade.

4)      Being named as “designers to watch”, whom in the industry you would watch closely/ find inspiring?
A formula of Bruce Lee, Martin Margiela and John Galliano. For these artists, what we find inspiring is the thinking behind their work and what they stand for, that alone is inspiring enough to want to start your own brand.

Shushu / Tong (Mainland China)
1)      Which city do you currently live/work?
We currently based in Shanghai.

2)      How long have you been in fashion as a career?
2 years and a half.

3)      What is your design DNA? What does your fashion represent?
We feature modern women who dare to express themselves by wearing unabashedly feminine details —ruffles, bowknots; but deflated of primness with relaxed and cool attitude. Expect unique silhouette and time-honuored tailoring techniques developed in-house.

4)      Being named as “designers to watch”, whom in the industry you would watch closely/ find inspiring?
Jacquemus, Simone Rocha

SIRLOIN (Japan & Sweden)

1)      Which city do you currently live/work?
We are based in Shanghai, where we found the possibility to fulfil our dream. Since the manufacturing industry is now moving forward from mass production to more innovative-driven, staying close to production gave us opportunity to achieve our brand concept – to bridge the gap between innerwear and outerwear.

2)      How long have you been in fashion as a career?
Both of us have been in this industry for 5 years now. Before coming to Shanghai, Mao worked at Louis Vuitton and Alve worked at Dries van Noten after our graduation from Central Saint Martins.

3)      What is your design DNA? What does your fashion represent?
Our brand philosophy is “Stupid Elegance” which for us means a humourous take on embracing one’s imperfection. Our vision is to redesign the wardrobe literally from inside out - owning underwear that matches with your favourite designer outfit is what we considered as the ultimate luxury.

4)      Being named as “designers to watch”, whom in the industry you would watch closely/ find inspiring?
“Rottingdean Bazaar” is super funny and interesting! As for young Chinese designers, we like Samuel Gui Yang a lot too.

The exhibition will also showcase The World is Your Oyster from Hong Kong; Helen Lee, Ximon Lee, Masha Ma and Simon Gao from Mainland China;  Christian Dada and Sulvam from Japan. This aims to celebrate and support emerging talents, while generating business opportunities and publicity with buyers, international media and industry practitioners. So do check them out during FASHION ASIA 2017.
