In the past month, Hong Kong Design Centre has ignited sparks of creativity with a series of exciting design events taking place in the city. From November 23rd to December 17th, events such as ‘Life is Art. Design in Motion’ Film Festival, ‘ What Design Can Do – Circular Design Showcase’, ‘DutchInspire Motion Design Showcase,’ ‘Motion Plus Design Satellites Hong Kong,’ ‘DFA Awards Presentation Ceremony,’ ‘DFA Awards 2023 Exhibition,’ ‘Fashion Challenges Forum,’ ‘10 Asian Designers To Watch’ Exhibition Opening Ceremony, ‘GBA Creative Night’, ‘Re: Full Gamut Exhibition’ , and the ‘Business of Design Week Summit’ have brought us numerous splendid moments.

BODW City Programme (CityProg): Communicating Circularity and Celebrating Local Game Changers

The sixth edition of CityProg, themed ‘Game Changers’, focused on ‘Communicating Circularity’ and ‘Celebrating Local Game Changers’. Paving the way for a sustainable future through three main directions: ‘Design and City’, ‘Design and Business’, and ‘Design and Lifestyle’, CityProg presented over 100 design-related events from November to December.

As the East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange, Hong Kong has always regarded film as an integral part of its local cultural and creative industry. In a groundbreaking collaboration, CityProg and MOViE MOViE joined forces to introduce the 'Life is Art. Design in Motion' Film Festival. For the first time ever, CityProg told good stories of design though films. The festival spanned from 23 November to 17 December and offered screenings at various venues such as MOViE MOViE Cityplaza, MOViE MOViE Pacific Place, and Broadway Cinematheque.

In addition, the festival invited cultural practitioners from different design and creative industries to be ‘MOViE MOViE MOVERS’ cultural ambassadors and share their design and artistic experiences during specific film screenings. The cross-disciplinary collaboration between design and cinema not only unleashed the possibilities of creativity, but also enriched the audience's cinematic experience.

As part of another collaborative endeavour, CityProg joined hands with the Netherlands, widely acclaimed for its proficiency in circular design, to curate two thematic exhibitions. The first exhibition, named 'DutchInspire Motion Design Showcase,' took place in Tsim Sha Tsui, while the second exhibition, titled 'What Design Can Do – Circular Design Showcase’, graced the West Kowloon Cultural District.

For ‘DutchInspire Motion Design Showcase’, CityProg collaborates with CreativeNL and invites the Dutch design company De Designpolitie to create a series of motion design works centred around the theme of the 5Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Redefine, Recycle). These works are displayed on the Sino LuminArt Facade at Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and Empire Centre with the sponsor of Sino Group. Through these motion design pieces, designers encourage the audience to contemplate how they can adopt more environmentally friendly and sustainable actions in their daily lives, further promoting awareness of resource usage and recycling. These works are displayed until 2 January 2024.

'What Design Can Do – Circular Design Showcase’ explored how design can balance the needs of humanity and nature to create a better world. This exhibition was jointly presented by CityProg and What Design Can Do (WDCD), an international organisation based in Amsterdam. It displayed 13 winning projects from the ‘Make it Circular Challenge’, a competition co-organised by WDCD and IKEA Foundation. The competition aims to discover and support outstanding global circular innovative initiatives and businesses.

The exhibited winning projects included BioCir™, a plastic alternative; Smart Disassembly™, a textile recycling system; Drinking Sea Water, a system for converting seawater and other water sources into drinking water; and Apidae, a system for cultivating stingless bees.
